The Devil Wears Prada
One week after the announcement of Apple's iPhone the first clone exists (LG Prada):

SEOUL, South Korea - South Korea's LG Electronics Co. said Thursday it is launching a new mobile phone that incorporates a buttonless touch-screen that resembles the much-hyped Apple Inc. iPhone _ and will be in stores next month.

LG's Prada Phone is being produced in partnership with the Italian fashion brand. It is set to go on sale in late February for 600 euros ($780) at mobile phone dealers and Prada stores in Britain, France, Germany and Italy, and comes to Asia in March.

KE850: no button interface with touch-sensitive screen, MP3-player, 2 megapixel camera, EDGE, memory on cards, a bit more expensive, but available much earlier (and not locked to AT&T)

Major draw-back: NO WIFI.

The official press release from LG see here, for pictures: here.

Will steal for AdSense revenue
A friend pointed out a blog called voipniche, which has some interesting posts in it. Like this one, this one, and even this one. If they look familiar to you, it's because they have lifted them from this blog, verbatim, with no attribution.

Let's see if this is an automated process, or if there is a real live thief behind this AdSense scam.

VOIPNICHE.COM REPOSTS ITEMS FROM EUROTELCOBLOG WITH NO ATTRIBUTION AND WITHOUT PERMISSION

I'll be curious to see if this post turns up there later today.

UPDATE: Less than two minutes later, the post indeed appeared on the site. Looks like voipniche is a direct RSS-reader-to-splog bot of some sort. What a wickedly ingenious development! I used Centralops to look up the domain. Seems to be registered to someone in Mumbai, but the traceroute ends in Brazil. Who knows, who cares? Enjoy that AdSense money, whoever you are!

Television journalists and photojournalists are uploading their customary resume tapes to YouTube and sending out a short pitch and a link to get the attention of hiring managers. And it seems the managers like this much better than getting a physical tape. It turns out that it is much easier to share the work of the prospective hire with others around the station.

The same goes for B-Roll and VNRs for the public relations set. Let s get with it folks, the DVD and tape are so 1990s!

Corporate PR 101: A Primer for Companies Interested in Social Media
And for those that represent them

Many of my clients that get started in social media do so because they have too. In other words, a blogger has started to cover the company in an intense way that garners attention, or someone in management says, Get me one of those blogs.

Then the marketing or PR department, to whom this feat has been assigned and whom often have little or no experience with it, casts its net for someone who understands this stuff.

Usually, they end up calling hybrid professionals who have been blogging or podcasting for some time and who also are public relations and/or marketing professionals. As those who participate in social media know, there is a chasm between traditional communications and communicating through social media.

First and foremost, the message cannot be controlled in these environments, although one does have incrementally more power if they have a platform from which to deliver a point of view, or more correctly, a passionately held world view.

I use a three-step process to help companies start to think and behave in a way that works for the online culture: Active Listening, Outreach and Engagement. Not all companies work all three of these steps, and some work all three simultaneously. However, taken together, they allow the most room for success in a social media program.

(Warning: Long post to follow)

Active Listening

Active listening is just what it sounds like. Reading and listening to what your fans and critics say about you on the Internet in blogs, podcasts, chat rooms and other venues. It requires more than just lurking, or reading without comment. It also requires that you let those talking about you KNOW that you are listening. This seems very risky at first since the corporate culture may fear making it worse and intensifying the rhetoric. However, I have found that in general, letting someone with passionate feelings know you are listening and that you plan to DO SOMETHING about it, actually lowers the volume of the complaints. In the end, your customers and stakeholders are out there making their voices herd, with or without your input. Wouldn t you rather have some say in how this turns out? Here is how to do it:

  • Get a Technorati Account. In Technorati search for your company name, your company URL and your company s CEO and or President, add them to a Watchlist and then subscribe to the RSS feed for each search.
  • Repeat the process for Google searches in Google Blogs and in Google News (each search has an RSS feed to which you can subscribe)
  • Discover blogs, podcasts, YouTube channels and other social media sites that are covering you, your competitors or your field of interest and subscribe to them. You will find many of these as you monitor through the Technorati and Google that you have set up.
  • Think about paid monitoring. There are many paid monitoring services that may come into play as your monitoring and active listening initiative progresses, but nothing beats getting out to read all of this stuff yourself every day and build relationships with individual content creators, which leads me to the next step

Outreach

Reaching out to content creators is an incremental process. In social media, one cannot just generate a list, compose an e-mail and hit send. Even with a lot of research, this is seldom very effective. In order to build the requisite relationships, one must read the blogger, listen to the podcast and become an active member of the audience. Not only should you read and comment on things that apply directly to your company, but also to things in which you may have some knowledge and interest, but no background. In many ways, it is just like a good media relations effort, but it is also different because you are dealing with impassioned consumers that are writing out of personal belief or intense interest. In other words, they aren t looking to be objective necessarily. Here are some of things you can expect to do:
  • Read and comment on blogs and podcasts, find out who the creator is and what interests them and add value by commenting new thoughts or a different way of looking at something
  • Send e-mails or make phonecalls behind the scenes to build relationships, don t say or do anything that would be a tragedy if it were blogged or revealed in some way, these authors and content producers are not usually operating from any kind of journalistic
  • Give bloggers access to information first, just after your media push (and sometimes before), but certainly before it is common knowledge
Engagement

Making the decision to start your own podcast or blog is the final step in the three and often the most difficult, there are many things that have to be decided in this step that are completely tied with the culture of the corporation. Hopefully, the first two steps will help the corporate culture come around to understand what works and what doesn t in the blogosphere. Many companies choose to start an internal blog or podcast before they do it externally. Other companies choose to dip their toe in the water with a limited external campaign. However, the most effective tool for reaching out to customers and stakeholders is a permanent presence in the blogosphere. There is no doubt that it is a big decision, in terms of human resources and the importance of response. Here are just a few of the things that need to be considered:

  • Who will write the blog or be the voice of a podcast? Social media are not corporations but people relating with people. So the personality and skill of the individual or individuals is important. Some of the more successful blogs have been GM s Fastlane Blog, which is written by senior management at GM; and Southwest Airlines Nuts About Southwest blog
  • Write a Code of Ethics for your blog that includes a clear comment policy. GM s Blogs use Charlene Li s Code of Ethics which is straightforward and tells readers what to expect
  • What is the topic of the blog ? You have the chance to set the tone of the blog as its author
  • That said, be willing to quickly address negative buzz when it occurs, even if it doesn t fall within the stated topic of the blog. Southwest has a recent post addressing a a complaint that went viral about how one larger passenger was treated
  • Measure the success of your blog. Charlene Li recommends that we quantify and value the key benefits of blogging, which includes assigning monetary values to the various benefits; estimate the costs of blogging, which includes human resources as well as technical ones; and incorporate risk calculations into the ROI. I also have put together a delicious tag with posts about the ROI of blogging; if you see any I should add, let me know.
In this single post, there is no way that I can comprehensively cover the whole process. However, last summer, some of my readers helped me put together an outstanding list of resources about corporate blogging.

Special thanks to the students at the University of Oregon and their professor Kelli Matthews, who invited me to speak tonight and for whom I specifically created this post. I would love to hear from the students about this post and what they think, Auburn students also are welcome.

Vodafone Group to Buy Controlling Stake in Hutchison Essar UK-based

Vodafone Group to Buy Controlling Stake in Hutchison Essar
UK-based mobile phone giant, Vodafone Group, has agreed to purchase a 67% stake in India's fourth largest wireless carrier, Hutchison Essar Ltd., in an effort to increase its share of the world's fastest growing wireless market.

The Disruption of the Disruption
Adrian Georguescu from AG-Projects sent me the following link to a press release from Nokia: Skype and Nokia to develop novel Internet-calling experience.
Las Vegas, USA - At the CES conference in Las Vegas today, Skype and Nokia announced a collaboration to develop a new mobile Skype(TM) experience on the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet, introduced earlier today.

The collaboration builds on the familiarity and richness of desktop Skype and makes it mobile. The Nokia N800's small size and easy wireless connectivity frees Skype users from their desktop, allowing Skype conversations to take place anywhere, as long as there is an available wireless Internet connection. Packed with features such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth phone connectivity, hands-free properties, webcam, media support and messenger keyboard, the Nokia N800 makes Skype conversations captivating experience at home, at work and on the move.

"Skype is the recognized leader of Internet communications with over 136 million registered users worldwide," said Ari Virtanen, Vice President, Convergence Products, Nokia. "Nokia's new N800 Internet Tablet is designed for mobile Internet. Together, we can develop communications devices beyond expectations."

"Skype is very happy to be partnering with Nokia," said Eric Lagier, Director, Business Development, Hardware and Mobile, at Skype. "Working with the leading mobile-handset manufacturer puts us in a unique position to get Skype to the mobile masses. With the introduction of the Nokia N800, we are positioning Skype as the centerpiece of Internet conversations on this WiFi-centric device. The Nokia N800 is an excellent platform for taking Skype conversations beyond the PC."

The first implementation on the Nokia N800 is expected to be made available for download by the end of first half of 2007.
Adrian commented this with the following statement:
  • SIP, an open standard IETF protocol, is nowadays the chosen protocol over closed networks
  • Skype, a closed solution, becomes the facto standard of communications over open networks
The world is upside down.

IPhone - re-inventing the phone?
I now took the time to watch Steve Jobs 2 hour keynote at the MacWorld in San Francisco.

I have to admit that Apple is really re-inventing the mobile phone. It is really a smooth combination of a super-iPod, a mobile phone and the best Internet hand-held device if have seen, all topped with with a revolutionary user interface.

Go and see yourself.

There is only one point I do not understand: why is Apple making this long-term, exclusive relationship with Cingular-AT&T?

Only because they wanted to have this Visual (Random) Voicemail feature and that you may use SMS like IM?

See also iPhone update: The decisions are all Apple's on the relation between Apple and Cingular.
...and while Cingular had to make sacrifices to its normal distribution and service model to land the exclusive agreement, Lurie said Apple was forced to bend also. Cingular managed to secure an exclusive distribution agreement for the iPhone and future iPhone models, meaning if you want the hot new device you have to become a Cingular customer, and even if you already are a Cingular customer you have to sign a new 2-year contract no exceptions, Lurie said. Cingular is allowed to take steps to make sure no rogue iPhones make their way to the market. It will lock the phones and take steps to prevent the phones from being hacked. And while Cingular s data upselling prospects on the phone may be limited today, Lurie said the companies are discussing options to open up the iTunes software and music services up to its mobile network, which could spell more data revenues for Cingular in the future.
What I completely did not understand was that the audience in the theater applauded to this announcement.

Recently there was a great deal of excitement over a military case, US v. Long, that found that an employee had an expectation of privacy in her email. Finding an expectation of privacy, the court concluded that the reading of the defendant's email was in violation of the 4th Amendment and surpressed the emails as evidence. The problem in this case is the facts. Long's email account was

Social media platforms, like this blog, are only as good as the relationships that one builds through them, both with an audience and with other bloggers, podcasters, etc. In other words, it doesn't work if no one shows up to the "conversation."

Last night I participated in a two-hour roundtable on Blog Talk Radio that included Jim Kukral from ReveNews, Shawn Collins from Affiliate Summit, Scott Baradell from Media Orchard, Mandie Crawford from Roaring Women, Mike Sansone of Converstations and Wayne Hurlbert from Blog Business World.

I don't know if anyone else tuned in, but as for me, I learned a lot and made some new blog-friends.

Here are some of the tips I jotted down that stood out to me:
  1. Get a MySpace site (which I have) and cross post some or all of your content to your MySpace blog.
  2. Use a YouTube video to pitch television stations instead of sending an expensive VNR or B-Roll that many TV stations can no longer use anyway.
  3. Send an audio message in lieu of an e-mail. I did some digging after the call and found this free social media tool for doing just that, Slawsome.
  4. Use Google Video to upload longer video clips, say a tutorial on how to have a better golf swing, or on whatever it is that you are an expert. How about a chef giving a cooking demonstration?
There were many more, and you can listen to the segment by clicking on the button below or going to the Nuts and Blogbolts site to download it.

Microsoft and Wikipedia: An Impossible Conundrum impossibleOriginally uploaded by Orrin.

Microsoft and Wikipedia: An Impossible Conundrum

impossible

So, how does a high-profile company, say Microsoft, get factual errors changed on Wikipedia? Well, the barriers are high, and getting more daunting every day.

According to Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, in a CNN article today:

Wales said the proper course would have been for Microsoft to write or commission a "white paper" on the subject with its interpretation of the facts, post it to an outside Web site and then link to it in the Wikipedia articles' discussion forum. "It seems like a much better, transparent, straightforward way," Wales said.

Microsoft had some problems with the entries for a Wikipedia article called Ecma Office Open XML, entering the conversation in the talk page last August with the following statement:

Why is the Open XML entry full of qualifications and attributions, while the OpenDocument entry presents similar types of information as fact without saying whose opinion is being expressed? I'm with Microsoft, so if I were to change anything in the OpenDocument entry I'm sure some would feel that's inappropriate, but the lack of consistency in editorial style is pretty striking and seems to reflect a strong pro-Sun/anti-Microsoft sentiment. Hardly encyclopedic, in my opinion.
- Doug Mahugh, Microsoft131.107.0.103 17:24, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Now, I have no background when it comes to standards, and I will not get into the merits or fallacies of Microsoft s case, but only in the process as it relates directly to other companies that might find themselves in this position.

In fact, last November, I started my own experiment to see how far one could get through the discussion pages, as was originally suggested by Whales, suffice it to say, it hasn t gotten very far.

In desperation, Microsoft hired an outside expert with no ties to Microsoft, but who had proved fair in the past, to look at the entry and suggest changes. Rick Jelliffe, who has a blog at O Reilly, fully disclosed the offer from Microsoft in his post, An interesting offer.

According to the CNN article, and in reading the subtext of his post, Jelliffe would only be paid for his time and Microsoft would not dictate the changes in any way. Since he was completely transparent, there is no way that Jelliffe would be able to contribute anyway as the community reacted, so the point is moot. I can't help but wonder what woudl have happened if he hadn't been so transparent?

However, this incident made it clear that the discussion pages alone aren t cutting it, so Wales offers the advice to post your own entry elsewhere, of course with a neutral point of view or NPOV as Wikipedian s call it, and link the article to the discussion page. (Here is Microsoft's decidedly non-NPOV press release about the standard).

I still like Joe Mabel s essay to PR folks about how to successfully navigate the process with Wikipedia. He also recommends referencing items on other web pages, although in a less hostile manner than Wales did.

Unfortuately, moderate Wikipedians like Mabel may be getting driven off the site. Wikipedian Geoffrey Burling alerted me to the fact that Mabel, an long-time Wikipedian, recently announced he was talking an extended break from participating on the site after an list of songs that he felt was a fun list of popular culture references was slated for deletion saying,

I had said a year ago that if Wikipedia become so tight-assed that we decided to delete that article, it would be time for me to leave the project.

Verizon rejected Apple iPhone deal
USA Today reports that Verizon was asked first and rejected Apple's iPhone deal.

NEW YORK Verizon Wireless, the No. 2 U.S. cellphone carrier, passed on the chance to be the exclusive distributor of the iPhone almost two years ago, balking at Apple's rich financial terms and other demands.

Among other things, Apple wanted a percentage of the monthly cellphone fees, say over how and where iPhones could be sold and control of the relationship with iPhone customers, said Jim Gerace, a Verizon Wireless vice president. "We said no. We have nothing bad to say about the Apple iPhone. We just couldn't reach a deal that was mutually beneficial."

Verizon's decision to pull the plug on talks sent Apple into the waiting arms of Cingular, which will be the exclusive U.S. carrier for the iPhone. The multifunction device is expected to ship in June and cost about $500.

If you read further and see the conditions Apple wanted from Verizon, one could raise the question if Verizon really passed a chance, or as Mark Siegel, a Cingular spokesman, said, "We think this is a win for Apple, and it is a win for Cingular."

We will see - it could also be a loss for Apple and Cingular and a win for Verizon ;-)
